Many strive for inner peace. While this is a lofty/worthy goal, one must remember the war that rages within us. Our very composition is at odds with itself; the G-dly soul and the animal soul each fight for control over the body. The G-dly soul's triumph is our purpose in life, and to that end one must always strive.
But one will not always achieve that goal. Life is at constant sway between success and failure. One must harness this alternating energy with positive actions and repentance for the negative. This will, in turn, empower the struggle for G-dliness in a kind of perpetual forward motion. Each success/failure then becomes a rung on a spiraling ladder.
Inner peace is a function of fulilling our purpose in life. And even though our purpose is to struggle, it is through that struggle that one can find peace.
